WE WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT US!
The Great Lakes Sport Fishermen Club-Ozaukee Chapter is a non-profit organization of sports minded men and women dedicated to the preservation, improvement and enjoyment of Great Lakes fishing,
especially for the Salmon & Trout which have been so successfully introduced into Lake Michigan.
In the early 1980s, local fishermen reported an illegal Lake Trout gill netting operation north of the Port Washington harbor, which resulted in prosecution by the DNR. This incident
triggered an awareness among the sport and charter fishermen of OzaukeeCounty of the need to have a recognized presence in the area. Thus the Great Lakes Sport Fishermen Club-Ozaukee Chapter was born.
Over the years the club has grown and joined with similar clubs in the state to form the Wisconsin Federation of Great Lakes Sport Fishing Clubs. Today, sport fishing clubs and organizations bordering the five
Great Lakes make up the Great Lakes Sport Fishing Council.
People often ask – “What does this club do for the fishermen and the sport? We believe G.L.S.F.-Oz can help you to become more successful fishing for Salmon & Trout. Please
read on!
Lake Michigan continues to be Wisconsin’s best “fishing hole” and state records for salmon & trout continue to be broken! Our club consists of members who have big boats, little
boats or no boats at all and even some Associate members who don’t fish, but are interested in improving the fishery.
By joining this club you will be helping to further protect and improve upon the world class fishery that we all enjoy so much in Lake Michigan! If you are just getting into Lake Michigan
fishing, have been at it for some years now or are a real veteran of 30 years or more, our club has a lot to offer you!
The Port Washington area offers excellent fishing opportunities. The marina launch ramps facilitate easy and quick launching and reloading of boats on trailers. The availability of
deep water close to shore allows smaller boats to fish the area successfully and safely. Structure abounds, which helps to keep the alewives and other forage fish close to shore. This results in great
near shore fishing when the water temperatures are right. Even if you don’t own a boat, the Port Washington breakwater can provide excellent salmon, trout & perch fishing. The Wisconsin Electric power
plant’s warm water discharge area also offers incredible trophy salmon and trout fishing year ‘round. The adjacent Sauk Creek has produced several record class fish!
Our club has done much by itself, as well as in conjunction with other clubs throughout Wisconsin and the other states bordering the Great Lakes, to protect and improve our Salmon & Trout
fishery:
GLSF Ozaukee makes numerous annual donations of money and equipment that are salmon and trout oriented. We have donated to the Kettle Moraine Springs DNR Fish Hatchery, located near Adell,
items such as an egg sorter, PH meters, an emergency generator, a scale, a water pump, stainless steel kettles and Steelhead holding tanks. We have also made donations to the Wild Rose and Lake Mills State Fish
Hatcheries. Our cash donations have helped to support the Root River Egg Taking Facility and the Manitowoc Salmon and Trout Rearing Ponds
.
In Port Washington itself we help support the needs of the Ozaukee County Water Safety Patrol’s rescue boat. We also installed the fish weighing scale and “Bragging Board” for
picture taking by the fish cleaning station and the 90 foot marine radio tower by the marina office, which is used to provide better communications and safer navigation.
One of our major efforts several years ago was the Sauk Creek Habitat Rehabilitation Project. Working with the DNR, Wisconsin Electric, the city of Port Washington and others, we were
involved with the placement of fish structures and deepening of a central channel in Sauk Creek to provide a good place for young fish to be planted and to return for spawning. To date, our club has donated
over $10,000 and hundreds of volunteer man-hours to this project. Sauk Creek is now an excellent stream fishery for children and adults.
Each summer we sponsor scholarships for High School students to attend the Natural Resources Careers Workshop camps near Stevens Point. We help fund the annual Disabled Veterans
FishingOuting in Port Washington and takethe vets out fishing. We sponsor a Big Bros. & Sis. Outing for groups from both Ozaukee and WashingtonCounties, with a morning of fishing, a picnic and a trophy
presentation to the boys and girls from these two organizations. All of these efforts are made possible through funds received from our membership dues and our fund raising events, which include a public
fishing derby and our Super Raffle.
